Delhi Capitals’ head coach, Hemang Badani, has emphasized the team’s resolution of top-order issues by acquiring fresh talents like Prithvi Shaw, Ben Duckett, and Pathum Nissanka in preparation for the upcoming IPL 2026 season starting on March 28.
During IPL 2025, DC struggled with low run rates and batting averages in the powerplay, particularly in opening partnerships, which averaged just 21.8 runs, the lowest among all teams, prompting a revamp for the new season.
Badani highlighted the team’s strategic approach, stating that the focus was on stability at the top, aiming to avoid the constant changes that hindered their performance in the previous season. The franchise’s goal was to strengthen the opening slot, a key area of focus during the auction.
DC, under the leadership of Axar Patel, is set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against the Lucknow Super Giants on April 1 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. Venugopal Rao, DC’s Director of Cricket, echoed the team’s commitment to trying out new opening combinations for improved performance.
Badani acknowledged the evolving landscape of T20 cricket, noting the trend towards higher scores and the impact of India’s success in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup on the game’s dynamics. He emphasized the importance of aggressive batting at the top order to meet the demands of modern cricket.
In terms of bowling strategies, Badani highlighted a shift towards minimizing boundary balls rather than solely focusing on dot balls, emphasizing the significance of strategic singles over conceding boundaries. The team is adapting to the changing dynamics of the game to enhance their performance in the upcoming season.
Reflecting on DC’s pursuit of an IPL title, Badani emphasized a forward-looking approach, focusing on improvement and strategic planning to secure victory in the 2026 season. The team aims to build on past experiences, identifying areas for growth and enhancement to achieve their ultimate goal.
Badani praised Axar Patel’s leadership qualities, highlighting his continuity as the team’s captain for the upcoming season. He commended Axar’s understanding of the team dynamics and his role as a long-standing Delhi Capitals player, emphasizing his suitability as a leader for the franchise.
Regarding Auqib Nabi, the Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler set to make his IPL debut, Badani expressed confidence in his abilities, emphasizing Nabi’s consistency and potential to make an impact with his bowling skills. He dismissed concerns over Nabi’s price tag, highlighting the player’s focus on performance over external pressures.
