A Delhi court has directed Alka Lamba, the President of All India Mahila Congress, to be released on probation of good conduct for a year. This decision stems from a case related to a protest advocating for women’s reservation before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Lamba has been instructed to provide a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh and maintain good conduct for the specified period.
In response to the court’s ruling, Lamba expressed her intention to challenge the conviction in the Sessions Court. She confirmed her conviction by the Rouse Avenue Court and emphasized her commitment to the ongoing fight for women’s rights. The case against Lamba originated from a demonstration at Jantar Mantar where the Mahila Congress demanded the implementation of women’s quota and tried to march towards Parliament.
The prosecution alleged that Lamba, as the primary speaker at the protest, led demonstrators beyond the permitted area towards Tolstoy Road, disregarding warnings from the police. The trial court, based on video evidence, charged Lamba with various offenses including assault, obstructing public servants, disobedience to orders, and creating danger in public spaces. Despite Lamba’s plea for discharge being rejected earlier, she continues to contest the charges against her.
