The Delhi government plans to introduce 2,800 new air-conditioned low-floor electric buses in the city’s public transport system as part of the PM e-Drive Scheme’s Phase I. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the initiative, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a cleaner and greener India. By 2028-29, Delhi aims to expand its public transport fleet to nearly 14,000 buses to enhance transportation services.
The deployment of these modern buses is scheduled to commence from April next year, with full integration into Delhi’s public transport network expected by August 2028. This move is a significant stride towards enhancing air quality in Delhi while offering citizens more convenient, sustainable, and modern public transportation options.
Of the 2,800 buses, 1,400 will be 12 meters long, while the remaining 1,400 will be 9 meters long. The inclusion of 9-meter buses is particularly beneficial for navigating narrow roads and rural areas, thereby extending public transport accessibility beyond primary routes and enhancing last-mile connectivity.
The Delhi Cabinet was informed that the government had initially requested 2,800 electric buses from Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) last year. Following operational insights from the Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (DEVI) buses, the procurement plan was adjusted to acquire an equal number of 12-meter and 9-meter buses. CESL conducted a competitive bidding process nationwide to facilitate the induction of all 2,800 buses, ensuring cost-effective bus operations.
Under Phase I of the PM e-Drive Scheme, the project offers a maximum government financial aid of Rs 35 lakh for each 12-meter electric bus and Rs 25 lakh for each 9-meter electric bus. These buses will be integrated into Delhi’s public transport fleet under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model and will operate through a designated service agreement. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will manage the entire fleet, with bus operations and service contracts under the GCC model slated for a 12-year term.
