The Delhi High Court has instructed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to prevent any commercial or religious events on the Yamuna floodplains at Sur Ghat. The court emphasized that even parking activities are not allowed in this ecologically sensitive area. No parking, whether for commercial purposes or to pay respects to the river, is permitted on the land in Zone-O of the Yamuna floodplains.
In response to a petition by Suresh Kumar seeking the restoration of a parking site at Yamuna Sur Ghat, the court directed the DDA to ensure no activities occur on the land. The court highlighted the environmental concerns and ecological sensitivity of the area, prohibiting all commercial and religious activities on the specified land.
The court’s decision came after the DDA withdrew permission for a parking site at Sur Ghat, leading to the cancellation of the parking site allotment. The court rejected the plea for restoration, stating that disputed questions regarding the cancellation and compensation could not be resolved in writ proceedings. It granted the petitioner the liberty to seek damages through a civil suit and directed the DDA to arrange alternative parking spaces away from the Yamuna floodplains if needed for visitors during auspicious occasions.
