The Delhi High Court has requested the city government’s stance on a PIL alleging the prolonged non-functionality of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), leading to a violation of women’s rights in the capital. The court emphasized that the DCW positions should not remain vacant due to their statutory duties and asked for updates on filling these posts.
Scheduled for further hearing on February 25, the PIL urges urgent judicial action to revive the operational and administrative capabilities of the DCW, which has reportedly become inactive due to executive negligence. The petition highlights the absence of leadership and administrative support, particularly noting the vacant Chairperson position.
Advocate Satyam Singh Rajput, the petitioner, pointed out the detrimental impact of the DCW’s non-operation on women’s access to essential support services and statutory programs. The plea underscores the constitutional failure resulting from the Commission’s inactivity and calls for immediate restoration of its functioning to fulfill obligations towards women.
The PIL also mentions efforts to raise concerns with the Delhi Chief Secretary and Lieutenant Governor regarding the DCW’s non-operation, emphasizing the need for prompt remedial actions. Seeking various directives, the petitioner aims to ensure the full functionality of the DCW, adequate staffing, and the appointment of a Chairperson within a specified timeframe.
