Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu has instructed the Delhi Development Authority to finish desilting rainwater drains by June 15 ahead of the monsoon. Sandhu, who also chairs the DDA, has been overseeing the desilting progress closely. The DDA has reported completing about 70% of the desilting work.
An extensive desilting drive of stormwater drains under the DDA’s jurisdiction is ongoing to prepare for the monsoon and reduce waterlogging risks in the city. The initiative aims to ensure smooth rainwater drainage, prevent road flooding, ease traffic congestion, maintain hygiene, and enhance public infrastructure upkeep during the monsoon season.
As part of the effort, the DDA is desilting 69 kilometers of stormwater drains in Narela and 192 kilometers in Dwarka. The work involves clearing silt, debris, vegetation, and other blockages hindering rainwater flow. Approximately 70% of the desilting operations have been completed in a mission mode, with the remaining work targeted for completion by June 15 as directed by the LG.
Regular inspections and monitoring by DDA officials are ongoing to ensure timely completion and adherence to quality standards. The initiative is expected to boost drainage efficiency, reduce waterlogging, and improve traffic flow during the rainy season. Sandhu emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive desilting exercise to prevent waterlogging issues for Delhi residents.
