Delhi-NCR is set to receive relief from the ongoing intense heatwave as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and rain. The region has been experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures ranging between 45 and 46 degrees Celsius. Thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall are expected on May 28, with wind speeds reaching up to 50 kmph.
Reports indicate that Delhi may see light rainfall, thundersqualls, and gusty winds during the afternoon, with similar weather conditions predicted for the evening. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and stay informed about changing weather patterns. The IMD has also cautioned about possible disruptions to daily life due to thunderstorms affecting various parts of the city in the coming days.
Despite the high temperatures persisting in Delhi, a slight drop is anticipated after May 29, offering some respite from the scorching heat. The Safdarjung weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius, with the minimum temperature around 26 degrees Celsius. The IMD forecasts a decrease of 5 to 7 degrees Celsius post-May 29.
In addition to rainfall, thunderstorms are likely to impact different areas of the city in the upcoming days. The IMD’s warning extends to neighboring states as well, emphasizing the need for caution during adverse weather conditions. The IMD has also highlighted a delay in the onset of the southwest monsoon, now expected to reach Kerala between May 28 and June 3, with Delhi likely to experience it around June 27.
Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category, with various locations recording Air Quality Index (AQI) levels. Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 284, Aya Nagar 156, Bawana 228, DTU 117, IGI Airport (T3) 183, IIT Delhi 184, JNU 146, Narela 254, North Campus 191, Pusa 216, Rohini 251, and Wazirpur 263.
