The Delhi Police advised the public to be cautious about trusting and sharing unverified content on social media, emphasizing the risks of deepfake and AI-generated videos. They highlighted the establishment of the Crime Branch’s Special Task Force (STF) as part of the government’s efforts to address paper leak incidents. DCP Central, Rohit Rajbir Singh, discussed the widespread use of social media, particularly Instagram, during student protests at Jantar Mantar organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
Addressing the press, DCP Singh noted the significant role of social media in disseminating news to the youth but also warned about the circulation of fake and misleading posts that can disrupt law and order. He stressed the importance of fact-checking information before believing or sharing it with others. The Delhi Police have been actively monitoring social media platforms to identify and counter fake news, AI-generated content, and edited videos that could mislead the public.
DCP Singh pointed out instances where social media posts aimed at spreading misinformation and causing panic among citizens. He debunked claims of a woman’s death during a protest and clarified that no such incident occurred. The police official also addressed a misleading video posted by a politician suggesting a crackdown by the Central government, emphasizing the need to verify information before trusting it. Singh highlighted the presence of Pakistan-based social media accounts spreading fake content and mentioned ongoing efforts to track and block such accounts.
The police investigation revealed over 400 Pakistan-based accounts sharing AI-generated content, deepfake videos, and edited images related to protests. DCP Singh mentioned similar accounts spreading fake news during Operation Sindoor last year. He showcased a fake video of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and emphasized the circulation of AI and deepfake content featuring Wangchuk and other fabricated videos. Singh also mentioned the formation of a Special Task Force at the Delhi Police Crime Branch to address exam irregularities, led by a DCP-rank official under the supervision of Special CP Crime.
Delhi Police expressed gratitude to peaceful protestors and volunteers at Jantar Mantar for their cooperation in maintaining law and order and community security.
