Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar responded to accusations of promoting family politics in candidate selection for by-elections by questioning the presence of family politics in other parties like BJP and JD(S). He highlighted the long-standing political involvement of Shivashankarappa and his son in Davanagere, emphasizing that such scenarios are common across all political parties. The Congress has fielded late Shivashankarappa’s grandson, Samarth Mallikarjun, in Davanagere, where family members hold significant political positions.
Shivakumar praised the contributions of late Shamanur Shivashankarappa and late H.Y. Meti to Davanagere and Bagalkot districts, acknowledging their roles as senior leaders who have served in various political capacities. He expressed pride in the development of Davanagere and Bagalkot Assembly constituencies, crediting the leadership of these veteran politicians for the progress in these regions.
In addition to defending the presence of family members in politics, Shivakumar highlighted the positive reception of guarantee schemes by the people, emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing support across all sections of society. He also expressed confidence in the success of the INDIA alliance in the upcoming Kerala elections, citing public dissatisfaction with rising prices and other issues as driving factors for change.
Responding to speculations about post-election power struggles, Shivakumar assured unity within the Congress party and pledged to abide by the decisions of the high command. He remained open to the leadership’s directives regarding future political developments, including any potential role assignments or responsibilities.
