The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has formally requested a distinct seating arrangement for its Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. This move comes after the alliance between DMK and Congress dissolved following the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. DMK’s Parliamentary Party leader, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking an independent seating block for DMK MPs due to the altered political circumstances.
The letter emphasized the significant shift in the DMK’s political relationship with Congress post-alliance, deeming it unsuitable for DMK MPs to share seating with Congress members in the lower house. Kanimozhi urged the Speaker to allocate separate seating for the DMK Parliamentary Party to ensure effective discharge of parliamentary duties.
Amid the political realignment in Tamil Nadu after the recent Assembly elections, the Congress extended support to actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) post a fractured mandate. This move by Congress drew strong criticism from DMK leaders, accusing the national party of political betrayal.
The request for separate seating in Parliament is seen as a symbolic yet significant step reflecting the growing divide between DMK and Congress. This rift marks a departure from their longstanding alliance in Tamil Nadu and national politics. Political analysts suggest that this development could impact opposition unity at the national level as regional parties adjust strategies for future parliamentary contests.
Neither the Congress nor the Lok Sabha Secretariat has formally responded to Kanimozhi’s letter. However, sources indicate that the Speaker’s office will review the request following parliamentary procedures and seating norms in the House.
