The DMK has called on the Centre to provide a clear plan for implementing the Constitution amendment that allows 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. This request, emphasized by DMK’s Rajya Sabha member Tiruchi Siva during an all-party meeting in New Delhi, stresses the importance of basing the quota on the current Lok Sabha strength, not on future delimitation exercises.
Siva highlighted the DMK’s support for women’s reservation but emphasized the need for the Centre to specify the timeline and method for executing the constitutional amendment. The party advocates for implementing the quota according to the existing Lok Sabha numbers and opposes any linkage to the proposed delimitation process.
Expressing concerns about potential reduced political representation for southern states due to the proposed delimitation, Siva urged the Union government to offer more clarity on the matter. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that southern states are not disadvantaged and suggested a 25-year suspension of the delimitation exercise if it negatively impacts these states.
