Around 60 individuals were hurt in a collision between two locomotive trains at the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. The incident occurred during a shift change inside the Pipalkoti tunnel late on Tuesday. The trains, one carrying workers and officials and the other transporting construction material, collided inside the tunnel, causing injuries to a significant number of people.
Chamoli District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar reported that out of the 109 individuals aboard the train carrying workers, approximately 60 sustained injuries. All those involved have been rescued, and the injured persons are in stable condition. The collision involved locomotive trains that are commonly used for transporting workers, engineers, officials, and materials inside tunnels during construction projects.
Ten of the injured have been transferred to the district hospital in Gopeshwar for treatment, while 17 others are receiving medical care at Vivekananda Hospital in Pipalkoti. The remaining injured individuals are also reported to be in stable condition. The collision caused panic and chaos inside the tunnel, prompting immediate relief and rescue operations by project management and local authorities.
The Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project, a 444-megawatt initiative on the Alaknanda River, aims to generate electricity through four turbines and is scheduled for completion next year.
