New Delhi, Aug 18 (IANS) The University of Delhi has suspended a PhD scholar from its Faculty of Law and barred him from entering the university premises with immediate effect after he allegedly assaulted a professor, officials said.

The action followed an incident at Umang Bhawan, where the scholar was allegedly caught on CCTV slapping a professor. According to the university, the incident took place at around 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

The scholar had been admitted to the Faculty of Law during the 2024-25 academic session under Phase-II.

In a notice issued by the Office of the Proctor, the university said the disciplinary action was initiated after it received CCTV footage related to the incident. Delhi Police has registered an FIR at Maurice Nagar Police Station, and an investigation is underway.

DU Proctor Manoj Kumar Singh said the incident occurred on Monday morning and that the footage showed the student allegedly assaulting the professor. He added that a committee had been constituted to examine the matter.

The university’s notice stated that the scholar had been suspended from the Faculty of Law with immediate effect. It also prohibited him from entering any premises of the University of Delhi, invoking Ordinance XV-B of the Delhi University Act, 1922.

The university has constituted an independent three-member enquiry committee to investigate the allegations and submit its findings.

Rajeev Gupta from the Department of Chemistry has been appointed as the head of the committee. Vipul Singh from the Department of History and Sudha Singh from the Department of Hindi are the other two members.

According to a separate notification issued by the Proctor’s Office, the committee has been tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and submitting a report to the university.

The alleged assault has sparked concern among members of the teaching community, with teachers’ organisations calling for firm measures to prevent violence and aggression against faculty members on campus.

The Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF) termed the incident the third reported case of violence or physical aggression against teachers in recent months. The organisation also criticised what it described as a delayed and inadequate response by the university administration to incidents involving campus violence.

The DTF said that faculty members had earlier faced alleged verbal abuse from another student of the Faculty of Law. The teachers’ body has called for stronger disciplinary measures and urged the university administration to ensure a safe environment while protecting the dignity and security of teachers.

The latest incident has also revived concerns over previous confrontations between students and faculty members at Delhi University-affiliated institutions.

In October 2025, a similar controversy was reported at Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, where DU Students’ Union Joint Secretary Deepika Jha was accused of slapping professor Sujit Kumar during a meeting of the college’s disciplinary committee.
