The Education Department in Rajasthan has introduced a new initiative to enhance reading habits, language skills, and awareness of current affairs among students in government schools. Students from classes 6 to 12 will now spend 10 minutes each morning reading national, international, and sports news, along with editorials and important updates. Additionally, they will learn five new words daily to improve their vocabulary.

The School Education Secretary has mandated this daily newspaper reading session during the morning assembly to engage students in news and boost their knowledge and language proficiency. The initiative aims to cultivate well-informed and articulate citizens by nurturing their interest in current events. Furthermore, special assemblies on “No Bag Day” will be conducted to discuss ongoing news topics.

To support this initiative, senior secondary schools are required to subscribe to at least two newspapers, one each in English and Hindi. Similarly, upper primary schools must subscribe to two Hindi newspapers, while English-medium schools should have subscriptions to both English and Hindi newspapers. During the morning assembly, students will read aloud from one English and one Hindi national-level newspaper.

The School Education Secretary highlighted that this initiative will not only provide students with valuable information on national, international, and sports news but also foster a habit of reading. It is expected to contribute significantly to the students’ overall development and knowledge enhancement.
