Eight individuals lost their lives, and two others sustained injuries in Tehri, Uttarakhand, when the SUV they were traveling in veered off the Chamba–Kauti road near Nail after attending a funeral. The victims, hailing from Thyoldhar village in Ghansali, were on their way back home following the cremation of a fellow villager in Haridwar, confirmed Tehri District Magistrate Nitika Khandelwal.
Around ten passengers were in the vehicle during the tragic incident, with emergency teams recovering eight bodies and transporting the injured to a nearby medical facility. Among the deceased were the son of the deceased individual whose last rites they had just attended, as per the police report.
The group had stopped for a meal near Agarkhal around 3 p.m., and the accident occurred shortly after, with suspicions that the driver might have fallen asleep at the wheel. Seven of the deceased have been identified, including individuals from various villages in Tehri Garhwal, Ghansali, and Tehri.
The injured parties were recognized as Uttam (30) and Ankit (22), with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressing condolences and pledging support to the victims’ families.
