The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the deadline for filing claims and objections related to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu until January 30, 2026. This extension offers eligible voters more time to verify and correct their electoral information. Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu, Archana Patnaik, announced the decision on Monday, highlighting the importance of ensuring maximum voter inclusion.
The initial deadline for submitting claims and objections had lapsed on January 18, prompting the Commission to review various factors before extending the deadline. The Commission’s official release urged all eligible citizens to take advantage of this extended period to submit claims for name inclusion, corrections, or objections to incorrect entries in the electoral rolls.
The Special Intensive Revision, initiated by the Election Commission in October 2025, set January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date for voter eligibility in Tamil Nadu. Following the publication of draft electoral rolls on December 19, 2025, the period for filing claims and objections was originally scheduled from December 19, 2025, to January 18, 2026. The Commission utilized its powers under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, to extend the deadline by almost two weeks to ensure voter participation.
Election officials emphasized the significance of the SIR process in enhancing the accuracy and integrity of electoral rolls. This process aims to eliminate ineligible entries, update voter information, and include newly eligible voters. Citizens can submit claims and objections through designated election offices and online platforms, with the extended deadline benefiting various voter categories, including first-time voters and migrants.
