The Election Commission of India has announced a home voting initiative for the 2026 Assembly elections and bypolls, allowing over 2.3 lakh elderly and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) to vote via postal ballots. This initiative aims to make voting more accessible for those aged 85 and above and flagged PwD electors. The move is part of the Commission’s efforts to promote inclusivity in the electoral process.
The upcoming elections will take place in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, with bye-elections in six states on March 15. Polling in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry is scheduled for April 9, 2026. The home voting option is provided under Section 60(c) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and eligible voters must apply to their Returning Officers within five days of notification.
In Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry, a total of 1,67,361 elderly voters have been approved for home voting. Kerala leads with 1,45,521 voters, followed by Assam with 19,774 and Puducherry with 2,066. Additionally, 70,499 PwD electors have been approved for home voting, with Kerala having the highest number of voters opting for this facility.
The Commission ensures transparency by informing voters in advance about the polling team visits, which will be videographed. The home voting process has already begun in Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry and will be completed by April 5. Candidates will be provided with a list of voters opting for home voting, and they can observe the process with prior intimation to the Returning Officer.
Voters who do not choose home voting will receive standard polling station amenities. This initiative is aimed at enhancing participation and inclusiveness in the electoral process, ensuring a democratic voting experience for all.
