The Election Commission of India (ECI) has instructed presiding officers at polling booths to ensure transparency and integrity in using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). It is crucial for officers to verify that all candidate buttons on the ballot unit are visible and free from any obstructions. No buttons should be covered with tape, glue, or any other material that could disrupt the voting process.

The Commission has explicitly stated that no color, ink, perfume, or chemicals should be applied to the candidate buttons, as this could compromise vote secrecy. Presiding officers are required to stay alert and report any suspicious activities or irregularities promptly to the sector officer or returning officer. Any attempt to tamper with EVMs will be treated as an electoral offense, according to ECI sources.

The Commission has emphasized that it will not hesitate to initiate criminal proceedings against individuals involved in tampering. Additionally, repolling may be ordered in cases of detected tampering to uphold the integrity of the electoral process. These directives highlight the Commission’s dedication to conducting free and fair elections nationwide. By holding presiding officers accountable, the Commission aims to prevent malpractice and maintain public trust in the electoral system.

At a time when transparency in elections is a significant concern for political parties and voters, the ECI’s strong stance underscores its commitment to democratic values and safeguarding India’s electoral machinery.
