Seven district magistrates and electoral officers in West Bengal faced criticism from the Election Commission of India for various violations during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision. The Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, expressed dissatisfaction with these officials during a virtual meeting of the commission. The districts reprimanded included Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Malda, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, and East Burdwan.
The Chief Election Commissioner addressed different issues with the district officials. Cooch Behar’s official was chided for delays in uploading identity documents related to the voters’ list. Meanwhile, officials from Jalpaiguri, Malda, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore were rebuked for neglecting their duties. In South 24 Parganas, an explanation was sought for inaction against an electoral registration officer accused of intimidation.
The Election Commission advised the official from East Burdwan to avoid making politically sensitive statements publicly. The Chief Election Commissioner warned all officials of potential disciplinary measures for any future negligence, which could impact their career evaluations. The deadline for claims and objections on the voters’ list is approaching, with document scrutiny continuing until February 21, and the final list scheduled for publication on February 28.
