The Election Commission has acted decisively against seven central force personnel in response to accusations of neglecting their duties. These individuals faced disciplinary measures while on election security duty in West Bengal, with two of them already in custody and the other five transferred to a different state. Orders have been issued for departmental inquiries into their conduct.
The upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal, scheduled for April 23 and 29, have prompted the deployment of 480 companies of central forces in the state. Despite strict regulations prohibiting personnel on election duty from attending social events, the seven individuals under scrutiny reportedly accepted an invitation and participated in an event. An investigation ensued upon receiving a complaint, leading to evidence confirming the allegations and subsequent punitive action by the Election Commission.
Allegations of central forces being misused or misdirected during elections are not uncommon. Critics often claim that these forces are sometimes intentionally made ineffective. The Election Commission’s swift and stringent response to the misconduct of the seven personnel is viewed as a significant step. The Commission intends to use this incident as a lesson during training sessions for future election duty deployments to prevent similar infractions.
