In preparation for the upcoming two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission of India (ECI) plans to boost monitoring by installing CCTV cameras. Sensitive booths will have three cameras each, with two inside and one outside. Non-sensitive booths will be equipped with two cameras, one inside and one outside, all linked to control rooms for real-time monitoring.
The cameras, equipped with artificial intelligence (AI), will alert control rooms if unauthorized individuals gather in the booths. They will provide a 360-degree view of the polling activities. Additionally, super-sensitive booths will have professional videographers to document the proceedings. The vehicles assigned to Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) quick-response teams will be fitted with GPS trackers for constant monitoring by ECI-appointed observers.
To address past issues of underutilization of deployed CAPF personnel, the Commission will closely monitor their movements during polling. Complaints in previous elections highlighted instances where CAPF personnel were not optimally utilized, leading to a strict monitoring system this time.
