The Election Commission of India (ECI) will utilize artificial intelligence (AI) for voter awareness campaigns ahead of upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. This move aims to counter the misuse of emerging technologies like softfakes and deepfakes in election processes globally. The initiative involves developing AI-generated videos on electoral topics such as EVMs, VVPAT, ethical voting, and election participation.
Under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program, the ECI has called upon media agencies and individuals to create AI-based awareness content. This marks a shift from traditional voter education methods to incorporating AI technology for enhanced outreach. The AI videos are required to be conversational, easy to understand, and devoid of political bias, as per official guidelines.
The AI-driven voter education material will cover essential electoral themes and will be reviewed by the Election Department before production. Each approved project will receive financial backing of Rs 50,000 and will be designed for dissemination across various platforms, including social media and television. The integration of AI in voter education is expected to engage young and first-time voters, potentially revolutionizing the approach to informed electoral participation in India.
