The Election Commission of India (ECI) has transferred 83 block development officers (BDOs) and assistant returning officers (AROs) in West Bengal in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections. Among the transfers, significant changes were made in the Nandigram Assembly constituency, where BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari is contesting.
The transfers mainly affected East Midnapore district, with the highest number of officials being moved from there. Suvendu Adhikari, who is contesting from Nandigram and Bhabanipur constituencies, faces competition from Trinamool Congress candidate Mamata Banerjee. The Commission’s move is part of a series of transfers that began after the announcement of the polling dates for West Bengal next month.
The transfer process has progressed through different levels of officials, starting from top-ranking bureaucrats to mid-level officers, and now to lower administrative levels. The Assembly polls in West Bengal are scheduled for April 23 and April 29, with results expected on May 4.
