England midfielder Jordan Henderson sustained a severe wrist injury while celebrating his team’s World Cup last-16 victory over Mexico, as confirmed by Thomas Tuchel on Monday. Henderson, who did not participate in the match, was taken off the field on a stretcher after an awkward fall from the advertising hoardings following England’s 3-2 triumph. England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed concern, stating, “Jordan Henderson just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad. It’s a quite serious injury and it doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital.”
Following the intense game, England’s head coach Tuchel commended his team’s resilience, especially after being reduced to ten men in the 54th minute due to a red card for defender Jarell Quansah. Tuchel praised the team’s unwavering determination and fighting spirit to protect their lead, emphasizing their strong mentality and refusal to give up. He remarked, “We needed everything. It was super difficult. In the moments we thought we could catch the momentum, we had setbacks. That is proper mentality. This team really mean it. When the going gets tough, they never give up, they never lose belief. It was one step more.”
In the upcoming quarterfinals, England will face Norway, who triumphed over Mexico despite the challenging Azteca altitude. The history between England and Norway dates back to their first encounter in 1937, with England winning the initial four friendly matches in 1937, 1938, 1949, and 1966 by a combined score of 20-2.
