The tensions surrounding confrontations with immigration officers escalated when a former Army man carried out a violent assault on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in New York. The man, identified as Andrew Arrabaca, 43, set off fireworks, poured petrol, and fired shots outside the federal building housing ICE and other government agencies, injuring three individuals. This incident followed recent shooting deaths involving ICE agents during traffic stops and a fatal accident where a man was killed while fleeing from agency officers.
Wheeling a cart with a poster reading “ICE Off Our Streets,” Arrabaca, who had served in the Army working on the Patriot missile system, launched the attack just before the office hours were to begin. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed his immediate arrest following the incident. FBI Assistant Director James Barnacle stated that Arrabaca had expressed intentions to target the building and was prepared to cause harm to people. Despite his arsenal that included axes, a hammer, and a machete, authorities managed to subdue him before further harm was done.
The fire ignited by Arrabaca was swiftly extinguished before reaching the building, and he was prevented from using the weapons he had brought along. Officials also recovered air rifles from the scene, with reports indicating that he had discharged pellets during the incident. Among the injured were a man waiting for an immigration office interview and two police officers who intervened to restrain the attacker. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, pledged support for the federal investigation and emphasized the importance of holding accountable those who endanger public safety.
