International experts and academicians gathered at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in Patiala for a conference on talent identification and athlete development. They highlighted the importance of developing quality coaches in India to achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of becoming a top-5 sporting nation by 2047.
The conference, attended by over 600 aspiring coaches and various sports professionals, focused on initiatives like Khelo India that aim to nurture young athletes. Participants shared best practices in talent identification, long-term athlete development, and sports science integration to enhance India’s sports ecosystem.
Notable figures like Prof. Nenad Trunic and FIBA basketball coach Richard Lee Brooks emphasized the significance of upskilling coaches for nurturing talent effectively. They stressed that guiding and training coaches is crucial for achieving success at the international level, beyond just identifying innate talent in athletes.
The event also saw the participation of experts from around the world, including Farruh Ahmedov, Dr. Pinar Yaprak, Prof. Dr. Hanno Felder, and Dr. Martin Toms, who shared insights on sports education and coaching practices. The Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, established in 1961, has been instrumental in producing numerous sports achievers since its inception.
Senior coaches and officials from the Sports Authority of India engaged with experts to exchange practical experiences and strategies in talent identification and athlete development. The conference received praise from officials like Sarvjit Singh, who highlighted the importance of such gatherings in enhancing coaches’ knowledge of international best practices.
