As the first anniversary of the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash approaches, families of the victims are still grappling with sorrow and uncertainties. Anil Patel, who lost his son and daughter-in-law in the incident, is among those urging the government to disclose investigation findings promptly. The Air India Flight AI-171 disaster occurred on June 12 last year, claiming nearly 260 lives when the aircraft crashed shortly after take-off.
Anil Patel emphasized the families’ need for clarity regarding the circumstances leading to the devastating crash. Expressing his profound personal loss, Patel highlighted the void left by the absence of his son and daughter-in-law, who were his main support system. He recalled the daily conversations with his son and the care his daughter-in-law provided, underscoring the irreplaceable nature of their presence in his life.
Air India has affirmed adherence to industry norms in compensating the victims’ families, refuting claims of pressuring families to accept settlements within specific timelines. Responding to allegations, the airline clarified that no coercion was involved in accepting compensation packages. As the anniversary approaches, relatives of the victims are planning a memorial program at the crash site in Meghaninagar on June 12, seeking police support for the event.
Around 150 bereaved families have sought assistance for the memorial program, aiming to observe a moment of silence, engage in a candlelight prayer, and pay homage to those who perished in the tragedy. The gathering is expected to host approximately 150 relatives of the deceased, commemorating the lives lost and reflecting on the impact of the incident. For many families, the memorial serves as a platform to honor their loved ones and continue seeking answers and accountability.
