Two individuals, a father, Mohammad Anwar, and his son, Mohammad Salman, were apprehended by the police in Kolkata’s Tiljala area following a recent shootout. The arrests took place early Wednesday as the accused were trying to escape, with authorities recovering a firearm, a magazine, and live cartridges from them. The duo had been evading capture after the incident, but a police operation near Tiljala Railway Gate No 2 led to their arrest at a rickshaw stand around 3 a.m.
The police received a tip-off late Tuesday, prompting the raid to prevent the accused from fleeing under the cover of darkness. The shootout occurred on Tiljala Road late Monday night, with Salman allegedly shooting a local youth, Mohammad Niaz alias Raja, over a neighborhood dispute related to the alleged theft of cold drink bottles. Niaz, a garage worker, sustained two bullet wounds to his leg and underwent surgery at SSKM Hospital, where he is now in stable condition.
Following an argument that started over missing cold drink bottles, tensions escalated, leading to the involvement of a mediator from a neighboring locality. The situation worsened in the evening, with Salman’s father supporting the mediator’s role, sparking a confrontation with Niaz. Later, Salman lured Niaz out of his house around 1 a.m. for a discussion, only to open fire on him outside.
The arrested individuals are expected to appear in court for further proceedings, including a likely request by the police for their custody to facilitate ongoing investigations.
