FC Barcelona has officially signed England international winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, making him just the third English player to join the club, following Gary Lineker and Marcus Rashford. Gordon, aged 25, agreed to a six-year contract worth approximately 70 million euros (81.3 million US dollars), with an additional 10 million euros in incentives. The signing was delayed by seven hours due to unexpected issues with the legal paperwork.
During his presentation at the Spotify Nou Camp, Gordon expressed his lifelong dream of playing for Barcelona, stating that he had aspired to join the club since he was three years old. Despite learning of Barcelona’s interest late, Gordon was quick to accept the offer, emphasizing his admiration for the club as the “biggest on the planet.” He also shared his excitement about the opportunity to represent Barcelona.
Gordon, who had previously played for Newcastle United, scored against Barcelona in a Champions League match last season. His arrival at Barcelona could potentially impact the club’s decision on Marcus Rashford’s loan deal from Manchester United. Barcelona may reconsider Rashford’s future at the club, especially as they continue to show interest in signing Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez.
Having joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023, Gordon has an impressive track record, with 39 goals in 152 appearances for the club. He has also represented England on 17 occasions, scoring two goals. Gordon is set to join the England squad on June 1 for the upcoming World Cup finals, following his successful move to Barcelona.
