Spain’s renowned football club, FC Barcelona, has officially announced its withdrawal from the European Super League project. The club communicated its decision through an official statement, marking a significant setback for the league that has faced challenges since its inception.
Barcelona’s President, Joan Laporta, had previously hinted at the club’s readiness to disassociate from the Super League, emphasizing the importance of returning to UEFA. The Super League, introduced in April 2021 by twelve top European clubs, aimed to provide elite clubs with more control over revenues and an alternative to the UEFA Champions League.
Initially supported by clubs like Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester United, and Chelsea, the Super League encountered strong opposition from fans and authorities. Following the exit of all English clubs within 48 hours of its launch, only Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus remained involved.
With Juventus already having withdrawn and Barcelona now joining them, Real Madrid stands as the sole remaining club committed to the Super League project. Meanwhile, Barcelona continues to excel on the field, leading La Liga and boasting an impressive record of 16 victories in their last 17 matches across all competitions as of February 7, 2026.
Under the guidance of manager Hansi Flick, Barcelona recently secured a place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals after defeating Albacete 2–1 on February 3, 2026. The team’s success is fueled by a formidable attack, highlighted by Lamine Yamal, who made history as the youngest player to score in four consecutive games for the club.
