Filmmakers Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane have teamed up to present the acclaimed short film “Thursday Special” by Indian National Award winner Varun Tandon. Sircar, known for movies like “Piku” and “Vicky Donor,” praised the film’s subtle storytelling, drawing parallels to his own unreleased work “Shoe Bite” starring Amitabh Bachchan.
Sircar commended Tandon’s nuanced depiction of companionship and aging, describing it as a heartfelt take on marriage and middle-age relationships. The film, recognized for its clear and sincere storytelling, recently won the Most Poetic Film Award at Serbia’s Küstendorf Film Festival 2025, selected by director Emir Kusturica.
Starring Anubha Fatehpuria and Ramakanth Dayama, “Thursday Special” portrays the story of an elderly couple, Ram and Shakuntala, bonded by their love for food and a weekly Thursday tradition. Motwane highlighted the film’s focus on overlooked narratives, emphasizing its unique and touching storytelling.
Tandon, whose short film “Syaahi” received a Special Jury Award at the Indian National Film Awards, expressed his long-held creative vision through “Thursday Special.” The film, which has garnered over 25 awards globally, offers a heartfelt portrayal of a couple’s shared passion for food and the intricate layers of their relationship.
