Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently inaugurated the northeast’s largest organic spice processing unit in Bhoirymbong, Meghalaya. The event was attended by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Sikkim Chief Minister P.S. Tamang Golay. This facility, established under the Eastern Ri-Bhoi Organic Farmer Producer Company (FPC), is the first organically certified spice processing unit in the region.
The processing unit is a significant addition to the organic agriculture sector in the northeast. It has the capacity to process over 10,000 metric tonnes of high-value organic spices annually, such as ginger, turmeric, black pepper, and chili. The Eastern Ri-Bhoi Organic FPC has developed essential infrastructure, including collection centers, processing facilities, cold storage, and transportation facilities.
Certified under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and EU Organic Standards, the unit provides direct access to premium domestic and international organic markets. It is expected to benefit around 5,500 organic farmers in Meghalaya and the northeastern region by enhancing value addition, reducing post-harvest losses, and strengthening quality control mechanisms.
The facility will establish direct linkages with national and international buyers, reducing farmers’ dependence on intermediaries and ensuring better prices. It will also create local employment opportunities and promote exports of certified organic products from the North East. Additionally, the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement is anticipated to enhance export opportunities for Indian spices, benefiting exporters, farmers, and MSMEs in the value chain.
