A major fire erupted at the Pallikaranai dump yard in south Chennai, spreading to a nearby vehicle holding area and causing the destruction of more than 100 seized automobiles. Thick black smoke engulfed Pallikaranai, Velachery, and nearby areas, leading to traffic disruptions and concerns among residents. The fire is thought to have started within the dump yard before quickly extending to where numerous seized vehicles were parked.
Eyewitnesses observed towering flames and dense smoke from several kilometers away as the fire intensified due to combustible materials in the dump yard. Emergency response teams, including Fire and Rescue Services personnel with multiple fire tenders, rushed to the scene to combat the blaze. Water tankers were also deployed to prevent the flames from spreading further.
The thick smoke affected visibility in residential and commercial areas, causing inconvenience to commuters and residents. Traffic along the Medavakkam–Velachery corridor experienced significant delays due to the smoke-filled environment. Officials worked tirelessly to control the situation and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the dump yard and vehicle storage area.
While no casualties or injuries were reported immediately, the incident resulted in substantial property damage, with more than 100 vehicles being extensively harmed. Authorities are assessing the damage and investigating the cause of the fire to determine if any safety oversights contributed to the incident. The Pallikaranai dump yard, which has experienced previous fire incidents, is under scrutiny for fire safety and waste management practices.
