The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) 2025, held from January 8 to 10 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, spotlighted the pivotal role of youth in India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation. This annual event serves as a platform to honor the contributions of the Indian diaspora and foster connections that drive India’s growth.

On the opening day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the transformative potential of India’s youth. He stated, “It is critical to invest in our youth in order to achieve their full potential,” highlighting their significance in areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Electric Vehicles (EVs), innovation, start-ups, space exploration, drones, and sports.

A special session, the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, was organized on January 8 in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Dr. Dev Pragad, CEO of Newsweek, graced the event as the Guest of Honour. This session underscored the importance of engaging young members of the Indian diaspora in nation-building and development initiatives.

The convention featured five thematic plenary sessions. These included discussions on diaspora youth leadership in a globalized world, the contributions of migrant skills, the diaspora’s role in sustainable development, women’s leadership and influence, and the stories of culture, connection, and belongingness. The sessions included panel discussions with eminent diaspora experts, focusing on the multifaceted contributions of the Indian diaspora to global development.

The Odisha government showcased its development initiatives and investment opportunities during the convention. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik highlighted the state’s focus on trade, technology, and tourism, inviting the diaspora to invest and collaborate in various sectors. The state’s rich cultural heritage and economic potential were emphasized to attract foreign direct investment (FDI).

Over 3,000 delegates from around the world participated in the event, reflecting the global reach and influence of the Indian diaspora. Delegates were welcomed with traditional ceremonies, and the city of Bhubaneswar was adorned to reflect its cultural vibrancy. The convention also featured cultural programs, including visits to significant shrines like the Jagannath Temple in Puri, offering delegates a deeper connection to India’s spiritual heritage.

The convention underscored the critical role of youth in India’s development. Minister Jaishankar noted that the younger generation’s global exposure and experiences could propel India toward becoming a global leader. He drew parallels to Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India in 1915, urging the diaspora to channel their international experiences into nation-building.
