Former Australian cricketer David Warner has agreed to a one-year contract extension with Sydney Thunder, a team in the Big Bash League (BBL). Despite a challenging season where the Thunder finished at the bottom of the table with only two wins in BBL 15, Warner stood out as the league’s top run-scorer, amassing 433 runs at a strike rate of 154.
Warner, aged 39, who missed two matches due to injury, secured his second consecutive Team of the Tournament selection and was once again appointed as captain. With a total of 1,139 runs in his BBL career, Warner expressed eagerness to contribute further in the upcoming season.
Expressing his excitement about the extension, Warner stated, “I’m really excited to commit to another season with Thunder. We are a much better team than our performance showed last season, and the unwavering support from our fans played a significant role in my decision to stay.”
Thunder’s General Manager, Trent Copeland, praised Warner’s exceptional performance and leadership, emphasizing the decision to retain him for another season. Copeland highlighted Warner’s outstanding skills as a T20 player and his commitment to improving the team’s performance in BBL 16.
Meanwhile, Melbourne Stars have also made significant signings for BBL 16, securing experienced players Hilton Cartwright, Sam Harper, and Peter Siddle. Harper, who was named the BBL Player of the Tournament, and Siddle, who made it to the BBL Team of the Tournament, have extended their contracts with the Stars.
