Former BJP legislator Mmhonlumo Kikon has been named the General Secretary (Political) of the National People’s Party (NPP) with immediate effect. The appointment was made by NPP’s National President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. In his new role, Kikon will focus on coordinating with various political parties and stakeholders in the Northeastern states to realize the vision of “One Northeast.”
Kikon’s responsibilities include reviewing political developments, assessing electoral readiness, and handling inter-state organizational issues. He will work closely with state presidents and office-bearers across the region. Additionally, Kikon will engage with the party’s elected representatives to ensure policy coherence and political alignment. He is also tasked with designing and overseeing political programs and outreach initiatives to enhance the party’s presence.
Formerly associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kikon served as a national spokesperson and was the BJP prabhari (in-charge) for Mizoram before resigning. A scholar, poet, and social worker-turned-politician, Kikon resigned from the BJP in 2025. He was the sole national spokesperson of the BJP from the Northeast at that time. Meanwhile, the NPP and the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) announced the formation of a new regional political front to advocate for the indigenous people of the Northeastern states.
Chief Minister Sangma disclosed the formation of a committee to establish the common platform within 45 days. The committee includes NPP’s National Working President J. M. Sangma as the convener and Mmhonlumo Kikon as the member secretary. Both the NPP and the TMP are allies of the BJP in Meghalaya and Tripura, respectively.
