Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel mentioned that the Congress high command will soon finalize the appointment of the Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly after consulting with party legislators. The Congress Legislature Party meeting, attended by all party MLAs, passed a resolution empowering the high command to select the Leader of Opposition, Deputy Leader, and Chief Whip in the Assam Assembly. Baghel, serving as an observer appointed by the Congress central leadership, stated that although the decision is pending, an announcement is expected shortly.
After the legislative meeting, Baghel individually spoke with all legislators to gather their views on the leadership matter. He conveyed the legislators’ opinions and suggestions to the party high command for consideration. Baghel emphasized that discussions are ongoing regarding various aspects related to the appointment, without disclosing any shortlisted names for the position. The Congress, with 19 MLAs in the Assam Assembly, is set to announce its Leader of Opposition following consultations with the central leadership. The BJP-led alliance, securing 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, emerged victorious, dealing a significant blow to the opposition.
