Former England Test captain Mike Smith, known as MJK, has passed away at the age of 92, as confirmed by Warwickshire County Cricket Club. Smith, who played 50 Tests for England and captained the team 25 times between 1958 and 1972, was honored with an OBE in 1976 for his contributions to cricket.
Warwickshire paid tribute to Smith with a moment of silence before their County Championship match against Glamorgan. Smith, a legendary figure for Warwickshire, served as the team’s captain from 1957 to 1967 and amassed over 39,000 first-class runs in his career, ranking 18th in the all-time records.
Starting his Test career in 1958, Smith excelled as a middle-order batsman after initially opening the innings. He led England in 25 Tests, registering five wins and 17 draws with only three defeats. Following his retirement, Smith remained involved in cricket administration, serving as Warwickshire’s chairman and an ICC match referee.
