Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai has called on officials overseeing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to work without bias and resist any political influence during the voter verification process. Bommai emphasized the importance of officials maintaining impartiality to prevent ineligible individuals from being included in the voter list and eligible voters from being excluded. The SIR process began with the distribution of enumeration forms statewide, amid reports suggesting pressure on officials from the Karnataka government and Congress party.
Bommai expressed concerns over these reports and stressed the need to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. He urged all election-related officials, including District Election Officers and Deputy Commissioners, to carry out their duties impartially. Additionally, Bommai called on the Election Commission to ensure vigilance teams monitor the revision process closely and guarantee the preparation of electoral rolls in a transparent manner. He emphasized the necessity of officials working independently and free from political interference during the SIR exercise to uphold the credibility of the electoral roll revision process.
The BJP leader highlighted the significance of maintaining the credibility of the electoral roll revision to protect voters’ democratic rights and ensure fair elections. Meanwhile, the Karnataka BJP accused the Congress-led state government of obstructing the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls. On the first day of the SIR exercise, over 12.48 lakh Enumeration Forms were distributed to voters in Karnataka, covering 2.25% of the state’s 5.54 crore registered electorate, as reported by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Karnataka.
