Former Madhya Pradesh Congress president Arun Yadav has raised concerns about ongoing illegal sand mining in the Narmada River during the monsoon season, despite a ban in place. Yadav shared evidence of mining activities in Babri–Jajan village, Sehore district, alleging that sand extraction was happening through unauthorized means, violating official directives.
The state imposes a ban on sand excavation in riverbeds from June to October to mitigate ecological risks posed by rising water levels. Despite this, Yadav questioned whether the alleged mining activities were being shielded by political support, urging immediate action to halt the illegal operations and enforce strict penalties on the perpetrators.
The accusations gain significance as the Sehore district had already enforced a complete prohibition on sand mining, aiming to safeguard public safety and preserve river ecosystems during the monsoon. The Narmada River, crucial for a significant portion of Madhya Pradesh’s population, traverses various districts, including Sehore.
