Former Member of Parliament and investment banker Eran Wickramaratne has been appointed as the chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket’s interim committee. The committee was formed after the resignation of president Shammi Silva and his executive committee. Notable figures like former national captains Roshan Mahanama and Kumar Sangakkara, along with ex-opener Sidath Wettimuny, are part of this interim committee.
The appointments signal a significant change at Sri Lanka Cricket’s headquarters after mounting criticism of governance, financial irregularities, and the national men’s team’s declining performance. The resignations of Silva and the entire executive committee were formally communicated to the President and the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports. Silva, who had been president since 2019, stepped down amid criticism following Sri Lanka’s failure to advance in the T20 World Cup.
The Sri Lankan government and the interim committee face the task of assuring the International Cricket Council (ICC) that this interim measure is a step towards constitutional reform. The ICC’s perception of these resignations, whether voluntary or indicating political interference, will be crucial in this transition.
