India’s rapid economic growth and large economy position it to become one of the world’s leading economies, according to former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark. Speaking at the World Economic Forum Davos 2026, Clark highlighted India’s strength in both traditional sectors and advanced technology, making it an attractive global trade partner.
Clark noted that New Zealand recently finalized a free trade agreement with India, creating significant excitement domestically. This agreement offers New Zealand exporters enhanced access to India’s expansive and rapidly growing market, fostering stronger economic ties between the two nations.
Addressing global trade dynamics, Clark expressed concerns over the disruptive tariff policies of the United States. However, she emphasized that with the US accounting for only 13% of global trade, there are ample opportunities for countries to explore and strengthen alternative trade relationships. Clark highlighted the significance of trade alliances beyond the US, citing New Zealand’s involvement in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Clark also mentioned the interest of the European Union in joining the CPTPP, with the United Kingdom already a member. She underscored the potential for major new trade opportunities through stronger connections among these significant markets. Additionally, Clark expressed her desire to see India play a more integral role in these global trade frameworks, emphasizing the evolving landscape of global commerce beyond US-centric disruptions.
