Former Rajasthan Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot, criticized the BJP government for its management of the Pachpadra Refinery project, labeling it as a significant example of prolonged delays in development. Gehlot expressed concern over the project’s cost rising from Rs 37,229 crore to nearly Rs 80,000 crore, attributing it to poor planning and politically-driven delays. He accused the BJP of causing harm to Rajasthan’s residents by prolonging the project and increasing its financial burden.
Gehlot highlighted that the BJP’s actions led to a substantial increase in the project’s cost, causing undue financial strain on the public. He emphasized that despite challenges like COVID-19, the Congress government had completed 80% of the project work. Gehlot questioned the BJP’s motives, criticizing their impact on the state’s economy and the employment prospects of its youth.
The former CM traced the project’s inception to the Congress government in 2008, noting that it was approved after interventions by then-PM Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. He underscored the project’s significance in enhancing India’s energy security and transforming Barmer into a key energy center. Gehlot alleged that the project faced political obstacles under the BJP government, resulting in delays and disruptions.
Gehlot emphasized that his government prioritized the refinery project upon returning to power, ensuring steady progress despite challenges. He lamented the adverse effects of delays on employment opportunities and economic growth in Rajasthan. Gehlot portrayed the refinery as a symbol of the Congress’ commitment to public welfare, highlighting its potential to boost energy security and economic activity in the region.
