Former Trinamool Congress MLA Atin Ghosh has approached the Calcutta High Court for anticipatory bail in a land corruption case. The Bidhannagar North police had summoned Atin Ghosh and his daughter Priyadarshini Ghosh in connection with the case. Instead of responding to the summons, Atin Ghosh has moved the High Court to challenge the police’s actions.
Atin’s lawyer, Ayan Bhattacharya, argued in court that Atin and his family have been falsely implicated in the land corruption case. He mentioned that a family member suffering from cancer was also harassed. As a result, Atin requested an urgent hearing of the case. Justice Suvra Ghosh has allowed the petition to be filed, with a likely hearing scheduled for later in the week.
Last week, a case of land grabbing involving Atin Ghosh and his daughter was registered, with an allegation of fraud amounting to Rs 50 lakh against them. A hotel owner claimed that his property was forcibly taken for a meager sum. The incident occurred in the Pragati Maidan police station area but the complaint was lodged with the Bidhannagar North police station in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area, where investigations are ongoing.
Atin Ghosh denied the allegations against him, stating that he does not know the complainant. He clarified that his daughter had legitimately purchased the property in question. Despite his long political career, he emphasized that no corruption charges have ever been leveled against him. Both Atin and his daughter, Priyadarshini, vowed to take legal action against the complainant for what they deemed as false accusations.
Atin Ghosh, a Trinamool leader, had won from the Kashipur-Belgacchia Assembly constituency in north Kolkata during the 2021 elections. Despite contesting again from the same constituency on a Trinamool Congress ticket, he lost to BJP candidate Ritesh Tiwari.
