Garga Chatterjee, the founder of ‘Bangla Paksha’, was arrested by the cyber cell of Kolkata Police for allegedly making provocative comments during the West Bengal Assembly elections. The arrest took place in the Deshapriya Park area of south Kolkata. Chatterjee is also accused of spreading rumors about electronic voting machines (EVMs) during the electoral process.
Authorities view Chatterjee’s comments as more than mere criticism, believing them to be a deliberate effort to erode public trust in the democratic system. They assert that his actions aimed to sow confusion among the public regarding the reliability of EVMs used in the elections. The Election Commission had lodged a complaint with the cybercrime department of Kolkata Police, prompting the arrest.
The Election Commission accused Chatterjee of intentionally undermining public faith in the electoral process by casting doubt on the credibility of EVMs. Following the arrest, Garga is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, where the police may request his custody for further interrogation. During the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Chatterjee had raised concerns about alleged EVM malfunctions during the vote count.
