The night from Monday to Tuesday marked France’s hottest recorded night since 1947, with a national nighttime heat indicator of 21.6 degrees Celsius. Meteo-France reported that 54 departments were under red heatwave alert, while 35 were under orange alert. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu mentioned that about 40 people, mostly young individuals, have drowned in France since June 18 due to the extreme heat.
France is currently facing an intense heatwave, with temperatures expected to remain exceptionally high until at least Thursday. There are concerns that the country’s national average temperature record for June could be surpassed. The national average temperature stood at 29.2 degrees Celsius on Monday and could potentially reach 30 degrees Celsius by midweek, according to Meteo-France.
In response to the heatwave, 1,352 schools and middle schools in France have been closed, while 4,042 others have implemented special measures to deal with the extreme temperatures. Meanwhile, Poland is also bracing for an intense heatwave, with temperatures projected to soar as high as 40 degrees Celsius in certain regions. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) stated that the heatwave is expected to last for three to four days before cooler weather sets in.
