France’s Diane Parry achieved a significant milestone at the French Open by advancing to the fourth round for the first time. In a thrilling match, she secured a three-set upset victory over No. 6 seed Amanda Anisimova at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris.
Parry, who had previously reached the third round of a Grand Slam five times, finally broke through to the last 16. The intense battle on Court Philippe-Chatrier ended with Parry clinching a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 victory after 2 hours and 44 minutes of play.
Reflecting on her win, Parry expressed her belief in her ability to win matches and her determination to succeed. She highlighted her physical readiness and the effectiveness of her game plan in disrupting her opponent’s rhythm, leading to her hard-earned victory.
The victory marked Parry’s second career win against a top-10 player and ended her seven-match losing streak against such opponents. It also set a personal record for her with eight main-draw wins at Roland-Garros, the highest in any Grand Slam tournament she has participated in.
Parry, the sole French player remaining in the women’s singles draw, mentioned incorporating a two-handed backhand into her game recently, a technique she is still adapting to. She emphasized the need to adjust her play based on opponent serves, court conditions, and her own form on any given day.
In the upcoming round, Parry is set to face unseeded Pole Maja Chwalińska, who secured a three-set victory over former world No. 3 Maria Sakkari. Meanwhile, for Anisimova, the loss marked her first third-round exit at a Grand Slam since the 2020 Roland-Garros tournament.
Anisimova, who had won eight consecutive third-round matches at majors, expressed disappointment at her performance but noted that her wrist injury, which had caused her to withdraw from previous events, was not a concern. She acknowledged the need to reassess her game and make adjustments for future competitions.
