The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has instructed food business operators to cease using metallic pins, staple pins, wires, or similar materials in sealing or packaging food items due to safety concerns. The directive highlights instances where metallic pins were discovered in cakes and food packages, posing a serious risk to consumers. Such practices could lead to accidental ingestion of these objects, potentially causing harm to individuals.
FSSAI emphasized the need for immediate discontinuation of metallic pins, wires, or similar materials in sealing or packaging any food items, bakery products, takeaway meals, snack packets, or food parcels. Failure to adhere to this directive may result in penal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its regulations. The advisory, approved by the competent authority and signed by Dr. Amit Sharma, aims to enhance food safety standards and mitigate risks associated with metallic fastening materials in food handling and packaging.
