In a significant political event, G. Sudhakaran, a veteran legislator and former CPI(M) leader, took oath as a member of the 16th Kerala Legislative Assembly. Sudhakaran, once a prominent figure in the CPI(M), was appointed by the state cabinet as the Pro-tem Speaker, now supported by the Congress-led UDF.
Following his decision to contest independently from his traditional constituency, Sudhakaran received strong backing from the UDF, marking a notable political shift after the Left’s defeat in the elections. As Pro-tem Speaker, Sudhakaran will administer the oath to the remaining newly elected MLAs when the Assembly convenes.
The upcoming election of a new Speaker on Friday will end Sudhakaran’s tenure. The Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan is expected to be elected Speaker, given the ruling front’s majority in the Assembly. The UDF holds 102 seats, while the Left Democratic Front has 35 members, and the BJP secured three seats.
