Gandhinagar’s recently launched air-conditioned electric bus service has been a hit, carrying more than 1.53 lakh passengers within its initial 14 days of operation. The daily ridership has been steadily increasing, reaching an average of nearly 11,000 commuters, as per data released by the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC).
The figures indicate that between June 29 and July 12, a total of 1,53,509 passengers utilized the e-buses, averaging around 10,965 passengers daily. Initially starting with modest numbers, the ridership has been consistently growing with more people opting for the service. On the first day, June 29, the buses saw the lowest daily footfall of 6,120 passengers, while the highest single-day ridership of 13,615 passengers was recorded on July 11.
The AC electric buses have been integrated into the municipal corporation’s public transport system, catering to Gandhinagar and its neighboring areas. These buses are equipped with air conditioning and CCTV cameras, aiming to offer a safer and more comfortable travel option for residents, office-goers, and students.
The service has become a popular daily commuting choice, especially for regular travelers within Gandhinagar and nearby regions. The buses offer direct connections between key locations like Sargasan Circle, Pathikashram Terminal, and the Secretariat, while also linking areas such as Kalol, Kadi, Dahegam, Chiloda, and Chandkheda.
To promote public transport usage, the corporation initiated a 15-day free travel period during the service’s launch. This initiative led to a significant number of commuters opting for the electric buses over their private vehicles during the introductory phase.
